Alexander's Ragtime Band video
Irving Berlin released this tune in 1911 from Tin Pay Alley. Despite its title, the song is a march as opposed to a rag and contains little syncopation. The tune tested the band's temporal mastery with a slow and simple theme that dies if it isn't played at exactly the right tempo. Basie never flinched. Neither did we.
